Kamel Hilmi, born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, joined Studio Outside in the Summer of 2016 as a Landscape Designer. His love for architecture and the natural environment led him to get his Master’s in Landscape Architecture from University of Oregon after earning his B.S. in Architectural Engineering at the British University in Egypt.

Before moving to the United States, Kamel worked as an architectural designer working on varying scale projects throughout Egypt. Besides professional work, he invested time with the Transylvania School of Self Sufficient Living in the foot hills of the Carpathian Mountains, where he learned to focus on self-reliance, sustainability, and traditional skills. He also volunteered working closely with locals in Oaxaca, Mexico.

He is interested in the psychological, social, and cultural aspects of the built environment, and their relationship to people. Those interests arose during the Egyptian revolution in 2011, and personally witnessing how Tahrir Square became a symbolic public space with power to influence the public.

Having lived in various countries prior moving to the United States, Kamel has always been keen to travel and experience their cultures and traditions. In his free time, he is dedicated to learning and practicing the piano, playing sports and staying active. And most importantly, spending quality time with his wife.
