Devils River State Natural Area
Val verde COunty, Texas

Studio Outside collaborated with BRW Architects and Texas Parks & Wildlife to develop the vision for Devils River State Natural Area. Known as the “cleanest surface water in Texas” and recognized as the 6th “International Dark Sky Sanctuary” in the world, the site was planned with limited daily permit access to prioritize the protection of its delicate ecosystem.

The visitor center was designed to provide mandatory educational sessions to teach visitors about preserving this natural environment. Additionally, lightly developed areas were planned for overnight camping, kayak river access, and trail experiences. While the visitor center, located on a high ridge, set the tone for the experience, the breathtaking river remained the main attraction of the journey. Campsites offered views of the river and the ridgeline from a shaded canyon, and a small day-use area allowed visitors to enjoy the river.
