Lena Meijer Children’s garden
grand rapids, michigan
With a broad mission to “promote the enjoyment, understanding, and appreciation of gardens, sculpture, the natural environment, and the arts,” the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park engaged with Studio Outside, in partnership with Deneen Powell Atelier, to re-envision their signature garden, the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden. As a centralized 5-acre garden amongst the sprawling 158-acre campus, the children’s garden has become one of the largest interactive children’s gardens in the country, with offerings such as an elevated tree house, botanical maze, storybook amphitheater, interactive fountains, and wetland education.
Meijer Gardens was recently listed in the top 30 most visited museums in the United States by The Art Newspaper, the leading publication in global art news. The Lena Meijer Childrenís Garden (LMCG) engaged with Studio Outside to re-envision their space for thematic and engaged playscapes and art interactions, both serving children and families while promoting the overall appreciation of the arts and sculpture collection amongst the childrenís spaces. The Studio Outside team created a master plan and revitalization plan to bring thing space into current trends and needs for the modern family and childhood experiences.
